Torrevieja Car Hire
Torrevieja has a beachside location on the Costa Blanca on Spain’s east coast within the autonomous community of Valencia. It is extremely popular with UK, German and Scandinavian tourists and attracts thousands of tourists year after year.
Torrevieja translates as “Old Tower” in Spanish and like many other coastal communities in Spain was originally a fishing village but over recent years the boom in tourism has radically transformed the economy of Torrevieja. Torrevieja also retains many traditions from its days as a fishing village and even has a shield/coat of arms depicting 2 small houses on the coastline next to a lighthouse that has been half destroyed, reminiscent of the major earthquake Torrevieja experienced in 1829 that destroyed much of the town.
Torrevieja is also located next to 2 major salt lakes known as “Las Salinas” or salt plains and salt-mining continues today adding to the predominant tourist economy for the city. There is also a Sea and Salt Museum for visitors.
These days Torrevieja is a thriving city located within perfect easy reaching distance of both Alicante Airport (44km away) and also Murcia San Javier Airport (31km) ensuring there are always a number of flight carriers serving Torrevieja and the surrounding areas. In 2007 Alicante airport and Murcia airport served around 11.2 million passengers which was around a 24% increase on passenger numbers in 2006.
In 2008 Torrevieja had a recorded population of 103,158 of which only around half are native Spaniards with the remainder being made up by mainly British, German and Swedish nationals. The ex-pat population has had a huge impact on the community of Torrevieja and there is evidence of a significant influence on the local services and facilities. Foreign nationals for example, have founded around 200 clubs and associations in Torrevieja in a multitude of languages as well as restaurants and bars that will serve popular foreign dishes alongside more typical Spanish tapas.
Torrevieja has 20km of coastline with several large beaches with very fine golden sands and more than adequate facilities. The area between the beach front and the marina is a very popular spot full of restaurants, bars, shops, market stalls and fun fair attractions. The marina and port area is also worthy of a separate visit.
For a family adventure day out visit the nearby Aquopolis water park, one of the biggest on the Costa Blanca. Open during the summer months June-September, Aquopolis can be easily reached from the N-332 or AP7 major roads in the area. The Habaneras shopping centre also provides hours of retail therapy complete with cinema complex, bowling alley and various food outlets.
For further shopping, Torrevieja is also home to one of Spain’s largest markets held every Friday with stalls selling local handicrafts, food, clothes, souvenirs etc. There are several markets in the area and it is easy to find one on each day of the week.
