Murcia San Javier Airport is a relatively small airport on the south-east coast of Spain but has also seen incredibly growth over the last few years as the area has seen major construction and new developments being built around the Mar Menor area.

Murcia Airport was the 2nd fastest growing airport in all of Spain from 2006 to 2007 with an increase in passenger numbers of 21.7% to give a total of 2,002,949 passengers flying to and from the airport. Murcia San Javier airport has been opened to commercial traffic since 1964 but has been used as a military base since the 1920s but it has only been in the last decade or so that the airport has really taken off as a popular airport to use for passengers visiting this corner of Spain. Back in 1998 Murcia San Javier Airport only saw 141,924 passengers use the airport so it is clear to see the growth and development of the airport from a small military base to the 10th busiest airport in mainland Spain in 2007.

The vast increases in passenger numbers is also due to the number of low cost airlines that now have flights into Murcia San Javier including Ryanair, Easyjet, Monarch, Jet2 and bmibaby. Murcia San Javier airport is also an attractive alternative to the next nearest airport – Alicante airport. Located around 45 minutes up the coast, Alicante Airport and Murcia San Javier Airport serve much of the same area for example Torrevieja, Denia and Javea, creating competition between the airports.

To cope with the demand, Murcia Airport has undergone extensive transformation and remodelling. Major works began in 2004 with an enlargement of the terminal to give 16 check-in desks, much more seating and queuing area in the entrance lounge and the addition of a newsagents shop. In the departures lounge the seating area was also increased and more shops added to give a duty free shop, mini bar/café, sweet shop, traditional Spanish souvenir store and also a Subway sandwich bar which has proved hugely popular.

The airport has also been re-painted in soft pink tones and lots of pleasant greenery placed around the airport making your last few hours in Spain a comfortable experience. If you want to spend your last few hours of Spain outside though, once you have check in it is customary these days to take advantage of the small kiosk just outside the airport to the side of the car park that sells cold drinks, ice creams and snacks where you can often stay until your flight is called. As the security area has been increased with an additional security gate, the queues are often not bad at all and so the walk from outside to kiosk via security doesn’t need to take more than around 5 minutes.

Murcia Airport is located on the north side of the Mar Menor lagoon, the largest salt water lagoon in Europe and a magnet for everything water sports related. As the lagoon has a higher average water temperature than the Mediterranean and is almost completely land-locked and therefore with very few waves, you can often see small boats, water skiers and people snorkelling in the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor sea can be reached in a few minutes from Murcia San Javier airport.

The city of Murcia is located around 25 minutes away along the carriageway the C-3319 and is well sign-posted and easily reached. Public transportation around the airport is not fantastic; there are buses that run to Murcia City but no train system to get you there. It is extremely advisable to use Murcia Airport car hire whilst in Murcia. There are a number of leading car companies that operate within the airport terminal and a number of others just a short transfer away.

Many of the new developments that have been constructed are golf resorts and consist of brand new properties centered around golf courses so there is more than enough opportunity to get out the golf clothing when in Murcia.
